A contest inviting college and university students in East Africa to come up with low cost house designs has been unveiled.
Home Afrika Ltd, a housing developer behind the upcoming Migaa Estate in Kiambu, wants entrants to come up with a low cost house design that can cost a maximum of Sh1 million to build.
Entrants in the contest dubbed “One Million House Competition” must create a low cost house design prototype of a stand-alone family house of 2-3 bedrooms with 1-2 bathrooms.
The competition is open to students pursuing the disciplines of architecture, construction management, engineering, urban planning or quantity surveying.
The contest runs from July 26, 2011 to September 15, 2011 after which the winners will be announced and awarded on October 15, 2011.
The individual or team that delivers the best design will win Sh160,000 while runners up will get Sh80,000. The winner will also be involved in developing the first pilot building and in the eventual development of mass houses for sale.
Home Afrika Ltd wants to enter into mass housing development targeted at middle income earners.
According to the firm’s director Mr Mbira Gikonyo, the low cost house design may deliver a break-through in the construction of affordable housing in the country.
“Many developers opt for the more lucrative upper and middle class building, but our vision is to provide affordable housing for all,” Mr Gikonyo said in a press statement.
