Air conditioning systems

Air ConditionersFrom window, split to multi-split system, there are many air conditioners types to choose from for your new home construction project.

Air conditioning contractors usually recommend specific types of air conditioners depending on factors such as the size of the space to be cooled, the amount of heat generated inside the building among others.

There are many different air conditioners types in Kenya, most of which fit into the following categories:

1.) Split Air Conditioners: Split air conditioners are used to cool one or two rooms or an open area. They consists of two units: the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. The indoor unit has a cooling coil or evaporator as well as a cooling fan, while the outdoor unit (placed outside the house) comprises the condenser, expansion valve among other components.

Split systems provide better cooling than window units or portable air conditioners and they do not require you to make a slot in the wall of your house.  As such, they are more costly and require paid installation. Split air conditioners are commonly used in residential houses.

2.) Window Air Conditioners: Window air conditioners are commonly used to cool single rooms in residential houses. In these units, which are fitted in a wall slot or through a window sill, the cooling coil, condenser, expansion valve and all the other components are housed in a single container.

Window air conditioners are often fitted without hiring the services of a professional air conditioning contractor. Some home owners dislike this type of air conditioner because of its bulkiness and the fact that it blocks out natural light if fitted through a window sill.

3.) Central Air Conditioners: These air conditioners are used for cooling big homes, offices, colleges, etc.

The central air conditioning system comprises a huge cooling fan and a motor (placed outside the building) capable of producing tons of cool air that is pumped around the building through a duct system.

Though expensive than the other types of air conditioning, central air conditioning system is cheaper to install compared to putting individual air conditioners in every room. These air conditioners require professional installation.

4.) Portable Air Conditioners: As the name suggests, these air conditioners are small and can be moved around from one room to the other as the need for air conditioning arises. They are the cheapest of all air conditioning systems. Unfortunately, due to their low power output and small sizes, they are the least effective air conditioners.
